ABSTRACT

This study highlights the growing imbalance between the number of young graduates from higher education and university programs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), specifically in Lubumbashi in the Haut-Katanga Province, and the limited capacity of the job market to absorb them. This situation is linked in particular to a lack of access to information, professional opportunities, and structural constraints within the market. The objective of this study is to analyze entrepreneurship as a strategic alternative to unemployment among young graduates, with the aim of promoting its adoption as a substitute for salaried employment. The methodology employed combines a qualitative and quantitative approach. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with managers of structures involved in entrepreneurship and employability (FEC, ANADEC, ONEM, Labour Inspectorate, Civil Service, One-Stop Shop), as well as through the use of academic statistics provided by four university institutions in Lubumbashi (University of Lubumbashi, Higher Institute of Commerce, Higher Pedagogical Institute, Higher Institute of Social Studies) covering the period from 2020 to 2023.. The results reveal a marked imbalance between the number of graduates entering the job market each year and the limited capacity of professional organizations to absorb them. Despite the growing number of graduates, the number of jobs created remains very small, confirming the urgent need to promote entrepreneurship as a preferred pathway for the socio-economic integration of young graduates.
