ABSTRACT
Introduction : HIV infection remains a major public health problem, particularly among adolescents, for whom adherence to antiretroviral therapy remains a challenge. This is despite considerable advances in the availability and efficacy of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Objective : To identify the psychosocial determinants associated with antiretroviral treatment discontinuation among adolescents receiving care in Lubumbashi, based on data collected at the Center of Excellence for People Living with HIV/AIDS at the University of Lubumbashi, in order to improve the quality of life and prognosis of the adolescents concerned, and to reduce treatment discontinuation. Methodology : A retrospective analytical study was conducted using secondary data from 280 adolescents (ages 10–19) followed between 2019 and 2024. The analyses included descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, and multivariate logistic regression. Results : The dropout rate was 42.9% ; factors significantly associated with dropout were : social stigma (OR=3.2 ; p=0.001), age 15–19 years (OR=2.1 ; P=0.008), low educational attainment (OR=2.5 ; p=0.005), and female gender (OR=1.8 ; p=0.022). Conclusion : Treatment discontinuation is influenced by major psychosocial factors, requiring an integrated care approach that includes psychological and community support.
